Botswana’s Ministry of Transport and public works broke ground on the A10 road expansion project on the 24th of September 2024. The aim is to increase the 2-lane carriage way to a 4 way carriage way to increase the road capacity due to growing logistics and transport requirements.

Along with project route stands a Bridge near Kumakwane referred to as Kolobeng Bridge A10. Delta Scan was appointed to assist the professional team to assist in the investigations to the current bridge and its suitability to be retrofitted or replicated to fulfill the expansion projects demands.

The bridge itself was completed in the 90’s having handled traffic, and the elements for well over 30 years. The challenges included lack of design information, out of date drawings, no 3D models and little as built information pertaining to structural capacity. Delta Scan was appointed as an extension to the professional team to gather all the necessary data to enable the professionals to make informed decisions and complete detailed designs.

Delta Scan mobilized to site and began assessments, completing the full capture by COB on the same day. For context the bridge itself spans a 60m gap over three spans. GPR scanning was conducted to identify rebar layouts and sizing on all integral structural elements including pile caps and piles. Concrete coring was conducted to verify compressive strengths this was followed by Aerial RGB and thermal data capture.

Delta Scan delivered a full 3D Revit model to LOD 300 Along with a report on all Rebar layouts identified. Combining this data allows for the Professional team to make informed decisions of best way forward. Along with this, Delta Scan supplied a 3D tecxtured digital replica with all defects annotated and quantified for rehabilitation costing, the thermal imaging was used to identify delaminations once again taking reports to a ‘deeper’ level.
